Road D623 is a road from Swartdam to Makapanstad, linking provincial roads P65/1 to P66/1 and falls within the remit of the Northwest Provincial Department of Transport, Roads and Community Safety.
The purpose of the proposed rehabilitation was to restore the road’s structural capacity and safety levels.
This was undertaken on a turnkey basis with Lidwala taking responsibility for the consulting engineering services as part of the contractor’s team.
The movement of taxis on this section of the road was problematic due to the tendency to stop anywhere. As a safety factor, shoulders were constructed wider than normal to ensure that the taxi was completely off the surfaced area.
This project comprised the following main work items:
Re-instating the road width to 2 x 3,7m wide surfaced carriageways and 2 x 2m wide gravel shoulders.
From (km 0,200 to km 0,450) the pavement layers were constructed with:
o 150mm of imported G6 material for Upper Selected;
o 300mm of imported G5 material for stabilized Sub-base;
o 150mm of imported G1 material for stabilized Base;
From (km 0,450 to km 11,730) the pavement layers were constructed by milling and construction of a 220mm stabilized base using the in-situ material.
30mm Asphalt overlay.
Stone pitching or erosion protection.
Construction of Bus Laybys.
Road furniture, road markings and road traffic signage.
