The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a modern rapid rail network for Gauteng that will be extended in the future. This investment in the future of the Province and South Africa, will link Tshwane, Johannesburg and OR Tambo International Airport. There will be 10 stations linked by 80 kilometres of rail, which will allow urban commuters to travel safely at high speed (160 km/h) between centres.
The Gautrain crosses the N14 Freeway in Centurion at Jean Avenue and runs parallel to the Freeway past Trichardt Road. The northbound on and off ramps at Trichardt Road were in conflict with the Gautrain alignment and needed to be closed. A new half interchange was therefore constructed at the K103 (M10 Wierda Road) cross road.
The project involved the detail design for the temporary deviation of the K103 to construct the new Gautrain Underpass structure. The reinstatement of the K103 involved new turning and passing lanes for the new connection with the N14 Freeway.
The main project however involved the detail design for an additional lane for the N14 between Jean Avenue and the new half interchange and the detail design of the new half Par-Clo B interchange at the K103 for northbound traffic.
