The National Route R35 from Amersfoort (3.85 km) to Morgenzon (42.96 km) is part of the important coal haul route network in the Gert Sibande District Municipality. This route is used extensively by the mining industry around eMalahleni, Middleburg, and Ermelo to transport goods to major port areas in Kwa-Zulu Natal Province.
The rehabilitation of the road required major upgrade of the geometric standards. Due to the high volume of articulated vehicles, accommodation of traffic presented a major challenge. The conventional approach, being the construction of a deviation, was replaced by construction of the road in half-widths. The shoulder on the non-construction side of the road was constructed wider to accommodate traffic in both directions. After completion of the construction of one half of the road, the process was repeated. The additional material was removed as part of the finishing of the road. This approach proved to be substantially cheaper than the traditional approach.
The rehabilitation inter alia included:
Geometric upgrade (Widening, climbing lanes and improved vertical alignment).
Identification of borrow pits and hard rock sources.
Separate crushing of materials contract.
